Australian hermit crab breeders
support program

Support

Breeding hermit crabs can be an overwhelming process, especially when working through the complex larval stages. Our program exists to support Australian breeders through every step of the journey. Whether you are attempting your first spawn or refining your breeding system, we aim to create a supportive environment where breeders can share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another.

Support included:

  • Access to experienced breeders

  • A place to ask questions without judgement

  • Shared troubleshooting and problem solving

  • Encouragement during both successes and setbacks

Breeding is rarely perfect the first time, and having the right support system can make all the difference.

Guidance

Hermit crab breeding is still developing worldwide, and reliable guidance can be difficult to find. Our program focuses on providing practical, experience-based guidance tailored to Australian breeders. Through shared knowledge, documentation, and collaboration, we aim to help breeders better understand each stage of the breeding process — from spawning and larval care to successful land hermit crabs.

Guidance within the program includes:

  • Breeding setup recommendations

  • Larval care techniques

  • Feeding strategies across life stages

  • Megalopa and land transition

  • Troubleshooting common breeding challenges

Our goal is not to gatekeep information, but to help breeders build confidence and improve their chances of success.

Accessible Information

One of the biggest challenges in hermit crab breeding is finding reliable information in one place. Much of the available knowledge is scattered across forums, international groups, and personal experiences. The Breeders Support Program works to make information clear, organised, and accessible for Australian keepers.

We are committed to:

  • Documenting breeding knowledge

  • Creating easy-to-follow resources

  • Sharing real breeder experiences

  • Making complex processes easier to understand

By making information more accessible, we hope to encourage more breeding efforts and improved success rates for captive-bred hermit crabs in Australia.

Our Mission

The Australian Hermit Crab Breeders Support Program exists to strengthen the breeding community through support, guidance, and accessible information. Our long-term vision is to help establish a strong network of knowledgeable Australian breeders who can work collaboratively to improve captive breeding success. By sharing knowledge, documenting processes, and supporting new breeders, we aim to make hermit crab breeding more achievable and sustainable within Australia.

A key part of this mission is working toward a future where the pet hermit crab hobby no longer relies on wild-caught animals. The global hermit crab trade still depends heavily on crabs taken from their natural environments, which places pressure on wild populations and ecosystems.

Through education, responsible breeding practices, and improved breeding success, we hope to gradually increase the availability of captive-bred hermit crabs within Australia. By doing so, we can help reduce reliance on wild-caught crabs and move the hobby toward a more ethical and sustainable future.

We believe that by working together as a community — sharing knowledge openly and supporting one another — we can help shape a future where hermit crabs kept as pets are bred in captivity, not taken from the wild.
